We have a new addition to the Divine family!

We are so excited to add another product to our expanding Divine by Therese Kerr range, that being our Certified Organic Personal Lubricant!
So, why did we create a Personal Lubricant? Using certified organic personal care products, we feel, is essential to limit the amount of toxins you place on and ultimately in your body daily. It is truly one of the best things you can do for your health. It is especially important to choose certified organic products when shopping for products you would apply to an intimate area…

Silicone oils:

Silicone oils may have toxic side effects, and as with petroleum-based products, they may coat your skin, affecting its normal functions and permeability. Silicone can have many names on product labels, including dimethicone, highly polymerized methyl polysilozane, methyl polysiloxane, mirasil DM 20, and viscasil 5M.

Phenoxyethanol can be harmful if absorbed through your skin, cause reproductive damage, and according to the FDA, depress the central nervous system in newborns. The breakdown of phenoxyethanol in your body releases phenol, which can adversely affect your immune system. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization, lists phenoxyethanol as a moderate hazard, with possible links to toxicity and skin irritation. Although it’s found in very low concentrations in some sexual lubricants, you’d do best to keep away from it.

Glycerin and glucose:

As sugars, glycerin and glucose may feed candida, a yeast that’s normally present in small amounts in the healthy vagina, but which can proliferate and cause vaginal yeast infections in women who are prone to them.

Propylene glycol:

Propylene glycol may cause burning or tissue irritation in some women. Glycols are also known endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
Knowing these chemicals are commonly found in almost every conventional lubricant on the market today we wanted to provide you with a safer, healthier alternative so you and your partner can bring a whole new meaning to ‘safe sex’!
Here are some of the ingredients we included in our Personal Lubricant and why.

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is a great alternative to conventional lubricants so it was the first ingredient we included in our product. It is natural, antibacterial, provides the moisture or “slip” required in any lubricant and is known to last longer than water-based lubricants. Coconut oil has also been shown to be anti-fungal, so it can assist with symptoms of yeast infections. As well as being good for you internally, Coconut oil is also great for you externally and also keeps your skin’s connective tissues strong and supple. Interestingly enough, coconut oil can penetrate into the deeper layers of your skin and strengthen the underlying tissues. It is ideal to use for as a luxurious full body massage, both before or after the main event!

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera, like Coconut Oil provides the moisture needed for a Lubricant to work effectively. It is also an ingredient used throughout our range as it has so many benefits, such as:

• Aloe Vera is high in Vitamins & Minerals.

• Vitamins A, C, E, folic acid, choline, B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6, B12.

• 20 minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, chromium, selenium, sodium, iron, potassium, copper, and manganese are present in aloe Vera.

• Aloe Vera is High in Amino Acids & Fatty Acids.

• Aloe has 20 amino acids, with all 8 essential amino acids.

• Aloe Vera also includes quite an impressive range of fatty acids. It contains three plant sterols, which are important fatty acids- HCL cholesterol (which lowers fats in the blood), campesterol, and B-sitosterol. All are helpful in reducing symptoms of allergies and acid indigestion. Other fatty acids include linoleic, linolenic, myristic, caprylic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic.

• Aloe Vera is an Adaptogen and helps with Digestion.

• Aloe is a vermifuge, which means it helps to rid the body of intestinal worms and parasites.

• Aloe helps boost the Immune System.

• The polysaccharides in aloe vera juice stimulate macrophages, which are the white blood cells of your immune system that fight against viruses.

• It has a high level of anti-oxidants, which help combat the unstable compounds known as free-radicals, contributing to the aging process. Aloe helps in detoxification and alkalizes the body.

• Aloe Vera is great for the skin, because of aloe’s well-known healing properties for the skin, aloe is one of the primary compounds used in the cosmetic industry.

• Aloe helps reduce inflammation.

• Aloe Vera contains 12 substances, including B-Sisterole, which can help to slow down or inhibit inflammation. This may be able to help with painful joints due to stiffness and help improve joint flexibility.

• It is also a great Disinfectant, Anti-biotic, Anti-microbial, Germicidal, Anti-bacterial, Anti-septic, Anti-fungal & Anti-viral.

Jojoba Oil:

Jojoba oil is one of nature’s most useful products.
Jojoba oil technically isn’t oil, but is a pure and luxurious liquid wax ester from cold-pressed seeds of the Simmondsis Chinonesis and S. Californica desert shrubs native to the Sonora Desert in the southwestern USA.
Native Americans applied ground seeds of jojoba to scratches to speed healing and minimize scarring.
Jojoba oil is a long-chain wax ester, not a triglyceride – making it very similar to the sebum your skin produces (via the sebaceous oil gland).
Sebum’s job is to retain moisture and keep skin smooth and elastic, the perfect oil to use in a luxurious, in scented, certified organic lubricant!

Knowing the difference between Conventional, Natural and Certified Organic…

Why is it so important to be clear on the difference between Conventional, Natural and Organic?

Why is it so important to be clear on the difference between Conventional, Natural and Organic?
Sadly in the food industry ‘conventional’ implies the food is grown normally. But if you reflect on your grand parents day the use of pesticides and GMO was not normal, so conventional which means food grown using synthesized (man-made from chemicals) fertilizers, possibly genetically modified seeds, and possibly growth hormones & regular antibiotics (in the case of meat) so is in fact anything but conventional.
Natural generally means no chemicals, genetically modified seeds, or hormones/antibiotics. As there is rigorous testing and expense involved with becoming organic. it is very common for small, local producers to market themselves as natural, non-certified organic, spray free, because they generally aren’t doing enough business to justify the time and expense to become certified organic. Natural is not regulated so it’s not a guarantee of anything.
Certified Organic is the customer’s guarantee that all products manufactured by a company adhere to strict and rigorous criteria defined by an appropriate certifying body. Organic food is produced without using conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients, antibiotics and growth hormones.
Some people lean away from conventionally grown food because they are concerned about putting chemicals in their bodies, while others are motivated by environmental concerns.
The certification criteria, i.e., Certified Organic encompasses every step of the process from pre-planting of the soil through to dispatch of the end product to the consumer via the warehouse.

Question 2. Is there a simply way of perhaps looking at the difference?

Many people think ‘organic produce’ and believe it is just about the things that are ‘added’ to the process that defines organic, it is not until prompted that the penny drops that it’s also about what is ‘missing’ with organic produce – that being pesticides, herbicides and toxic synthetic chemicals. It is only then that organic & certified organic becomes meaningful.
If we take the cosmetic industry as an example The Australian Certified Organics (ACO) has produced a criteria against which certified organic products are assessed. When you review the criteria or Certified and Natural, it is easy to see the differences. Amongst the difference Natural allows ingredients to be sources from genetically modified plants.
Stay tuned for Part 2 where I share what do some of the Conventional and/or even “Natural” products contain that Certified Organic don’t?

Top 10 health benefits of Rooibos Tea!

A question we get asked often is why dis The Divine By Therese Kerr certified organic products all contain this incredible antioxidant-rich Rooibos Tea. The health benefits of Rooibos tea or red bush tea as it is also known as, are numerous and remarkable. It is grown from a small shrub, which only thrives in the Cedarberg region near Cape Town, South Africa.

10 Health Benefits of Rooibos Tea:

1. Caffeine free: The rooibos plant grows naturally without any caffeine. This is important, as it means it does not need to undergo a chemical process to remove the caffeine. It also means that anyone can drink it, including those who do not want to drink caffeine such as children & pregnant women. The other key benefit of no caffeine is that rooibos tea can be consumed in unrestricted amounts. Some South African’s will consume 5-6 cups per day.

2. Contains powerful antioxidants: Rooibos tea contains a wide array of antioxidants, which help to protect the body in a number of ways. Two polyphenol antioxidants called aspalathin and nothofagin are found in high concentrations in rooibos tea. These antioxidants protect the body by fighting free radicals. These are unstable cells, which attack healthy cells in order to stabilize themselves. The polyphenols also have anti-inflammatory properties and can safeguard against heart disease.
3. Prevents against some cancers: Some studies have demonstrated a link between consumption of rooibos tea and a reduction of cancer-causing chemicals. This is because of the high level of dominant antioxidants, some of which have anti-mutagenic (anti-cancer) properties. This means that they defend cells & DNA against damage and inhibit them from developing into cancer.
4. High mineral content: One of the key health benefits of rooibos tea is that it contains several minerals that are vital to health. These include: magnesium (essential for the nervous system), calcium & manganese (essential for strong teeth and bones), zinc (important for metabolism) and iron (critical for helping blood & muscles distribute oxygen).

5. Improves circulation: One of the many potent antioxidants in rooibos tea is called Chysoeriol. It can improve circulation by preventing the activity of the enzyme that triggers cardiovascular disease. Drinking rooibos tea also has been known to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
6. Relieves stomach complaints: As rooibos tea contains high levels of flavonoids, especially one called quercetin. It has the ability to relieve numerous abdominal ailments such as cramps, diahorrea and indigestion. Flavonoids are known help to reduce spasm, inflammation and allergies. It has also been widely stated that the health benefits of rooibos tea extend to alleviating colic in babies. s it is totally caffeine free, it is perfectly safe for them to drink rooibos tea.
7. Aids absorption of iron: Unlike most black teas, which prevent the body from absorbing iron effectively because of the tannins they contain, rooibos tea supports the body in absorbing iron. Rooibos tea contains less than half the tannins of black tea.

8. Can relieve skin conditions: Rooibos tea contains phenylpyretic acid, which can help to improve acne, psoriasis and eczema. You can apply a freshly brewed and cooled tea bag to the affected areas and it will soothe and heal any inflammation. You can also add it to your bath.
9. May assist with protection against Parkinsons/Alzheimers disease: Drinking rooibos tea regularly may protect against a process known as lipid peridoxation. This occurs when free radicals damage brain cells and nerve tissue. If this is prolonged, it may lead to progressive and deteriorating brain disease, such as Alzheimer’s.
10. Encourages restful sleep: Rooibos is unique in that it can be consumed as often as you wish and at any time of day. Many people choose to drink it before bedtime as it can help with insomnia. Due to its high mineral content and lack of caffeine, it’s known to help people to feel calm and relaxed.
Rooibos Tea is said to contain 50 times more antioxidants than Green Tea!
Every product in the Divine By Therese Kerr range contains this incredible ingredient along with many other nutrient-rich ingredients.
